True Feelings Shown in a Short Story

"The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin is a short story that will make you want to continue reading until the end. Chopin did an amazing job of showing true feelings that may shock most people.

In this story, the sister of the main character, Mrs. Mallard, tells her that her husband died in a train crash. "Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. It was he who had been in the newspaper office when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, with Brently Mallard's name leading the list of "killed." She didn't know what to do except cry, which I'm sure would be anyone's first reaction. Then when she goes out for a walk she starts thinking to herself that she's now free. "She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!"The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright."

By her saying she was free at first confused me, but then I realized that she was probably abused in this relationship. She was probably unhappy because of this abuse, but never realized it could all go away one day. Her realization made her happy, and then I became happy for her. She doesn't have to be scared, or hide from him anymore. This reminded me of when Chris Brown physically abused Rihanna during their relationship. Rihanna hated it, so she finally broke up with him after he punched her in the face. Then she became happy again, you could tell she felt free.

  1. A very well written review! I liked your creative title and your hook was a very good attention grabber. Your concluding paragraph was also very strong.

  2. This story was my favorite! I really liked your intro of the review and how it was sweet, yet simple. However, when quoting things from the story be sure to cite them. Other than that I think you did a great job.

  3. I like how you concluded your review, but even after breaking up don't Rihanna and Chris Brown end up together again?

  5. This is a very well written review. I liked how you explained why she "felt free" in the story because I was confused about that. I also liked how you connected the story to modern day media. Good job Rachel!
